This week has been Ashton Community Science College’s Career’s Week!

Alongside our weekly career form-time slots (where all year groups explore different jobs of the week and employability skills) we also have one special week in the year to celebrate careers and link careers to the curriculum. We have tailored the date of our Careers Week to this week in order to help meet the needs of our year 9 students. It enables them to feel more informed about future career pathways before making decisions about their GCSE options during this month!

Careers in the Curriculum

The week has included all subject departments getting involved in linking careers to their curriculum. For example; Child Development have been learning about midwifery as a career, English have been speaking to an ITV journalist, History have been discussing careers in law, Science have been learning about the role of a forensic scientist and P.E have been learning about physiotherapists. We want to say a big thank you to all of our teachers across all subjects (and also the businesses involved) for supporting this week and emphasising the importance of their subjects for our student’s aspirations.

FutureU PSHE – ‘Student Life’ Talks

We have also had the pleasure of welcoming FutureU (higher education organisation) into school to talk to our year 9 – 11 students in PSHE about higher education. Students had the chance to hear a UCLAN student’s experience of university and have asked plenty of questions about university study and university life. Before this week, many of our students hadn’t considered going to university due to aspects such as student-debt, or not having the confidence to feel they are capable of going to university. We are hoping that after this week, many are feeling more informed, inspired and confident! Thank you to FutureU for visiting us and delivering a number of talks and assemblies this week!

Today’s Careers Fair to celebrate our Careers Week!

Today to celebrate our Careers Week, we had our lively Careers Fair for years 8 – 11. Students had the chance to visit employers and businesses such as: MJH Accounting, Adecco Recruitment, BAE, Collinson Construction NHS and Ashbridge Nurseries. We also had a range of technical education and apprenticeship providers in such as T200, Alliance Learning, Preston College and Myerscough College. Students used the opportunity to walk around and ask a number of questions to each provider and employer; helping them learn more about the sectors and careers available for them to work in; alongside the post-16 & 18 pathways needed to get to certain careers! A big thank you to all providers and employers who have supported us today!

Next week we will have plenty of pictures to show you from the day and more to tell you about what our students learned today! Please keep tuned!

Remember that careers support is always available here at Ashton Community Science College! Students can book an appointment with Christiana during break, lunch, or after-school to discuss: GCSE options, college applications, self-awareness and any additional support with their goals and aspirations. Pop into her office near the Maths stairs or message her on MS teams to book in!
