Year 10 GCSE Visit to Masjid-E-Saliheen

Article by Matylda K

Last Thursday, Year 10 RE GCSE visited Masjid-E-Saliheen Mosque as a way to broaden our knowledge for our Islam module. We were privileged enough to be able to attend during prayer time, allowing us to see what it’s like for Muslims to partake in their daily mandatory prayer. Throughout the trip, we had the joy of being guided by an Imam, the leader of Islamic prayer, and a Hafiz, a person who has memorised the Islamic holy book by heart. The whole mosque was gorgeously decorated with mesmerising geometric shapes which lined almost every wall and ceiling, along with Arabic calligraphy that had been beautifully painted onto the walls by hand.

We were also shown where people perform their ablutions – the act of washing oneself to be spiritually cleansed before prayer, called wudu in Arabic – and the importance of being clean while inside the mosque, which was demonstrated by us having to take off our shoes to walk around. To end the trip, we were lucky enough to hear a call to prayer being performed by the guide –  it was so melodious and enchanting. Here’s what some of the students said about this trip:

Kaitlin: The architecture of the building as a whole was beautiful: there was a huge chandelier in the women’s praying hall, marble everywhere, and hand-painted Islamic calligraphy on the walls.

Evie: I enjoyed the trip to the mosque; I found it interesting to watch the men come together in unity while praying to Allah.

Sam: Before we left, we were lucky enough to hear a call to prayer, which was eye-opening and an amazing experience.

Sophie: The trip to the mosque was fascinating to see. It was a great experience!

Chelsy: I enjoyed listening to the call to prayer. I enjoyed walking along the really soft carpet and heated floors.

Lucie: The trip was very interesting. I enjoyed listening to the call to prayer as it was very relaxing.
